Here’s what you can expect from this episode:

You know those 15 minute recruiter screens that pop up on your calendar as an intro call or initial conversation? Maybe you skim the job description, figure you’ll talk about yourself for a little bit, and assume the real interview starts after this conversation. But that first call could actually be make or break.

The recruiter screen is where I watch more people get cut than anywhere else, and a lot of the time, it’s being decided within the first five minutes. Recruiters are assessing candidates really freaking fast, and with the sheer volume of applicants coming in for Customer Success roles right now, their role in the hiring process has become even more important.

In this episode, I’m breaking down the five most common mistakes I see CSMs make in those first few minutes and exactly how to avoid them. I teach you how to build rapport instead of rushing into interview mode, giving your background some actual structure so you don’t ramble, making it extremely easy for the recruiter to say yes to you, having a human conversation instead of talking at them, and preparing without sounding memorized or overly rehearsed.

And the really good news is none of this requires another year of experience or some brand new skill. These are little things you can fix literally today that can help you make a stronger first impression and give yourself a better shot at moving forward to the next round. If you want to stop treating the recruiter screen like the conversation before the real interview and start showing up ready to nail it, hit play and let’s get into it.

  • Why building rapport and matching the recruiter’s energy matters before they even ask about your experience
  • How to structure your background so you give recruiters the information they actually need without rambling through your entire resume
  • How to make it extremely easy for the recruiter to say yes by connecting your experience directly to what they’re looking for
  • Why talking at the recruiter can hurt you and how to keep your answers feeling like a natural human conversation
  • Why sounding memorized or overly rehearsed can kill connection and what to do instead so you still sound prepared
