Here’s what you can expect from this episode:

If you’re looking at CSM job postings and constantly thinking, “I’m either overqualified for this or completely underqualified for that,” you’re definitely not the only one. I see this confusion all the time, from people with just a couple of years of experience all the way through to VPs of Customer Success. And when you’re applying to role after role and barely hearing back, it’s really easy to start wondering if you’re the problem.

One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is putting way too much weight on job titles. Titles in Customer Success can mean completely different things from one company to another, so instead of asking whether the title matches your current level, you need to look at what the role actually involves. That means looking at the book of business you’d manage, which parts of the customer lifecycle you’d own, and the domain or industry you’d be working in.

I also share what to do when you feel overqualified for a role and why taking a step back on paper does not necessarily mean taking a step back in your career. Your motivation for finding a new job, the stage of life you’re in, and what you want your next few years to look like should all influence which opportunities make sense for you.

And if you feel underqualified, I’ll show you how to figure out whether the gap is small enough to apply anyway or whether you’re probably wasting your time.

And if you’re tired of second guessing which CSM roles are actually worth your time, apply for coaching HERE and let’s build a job search strategy around the right roles for you.

Topics covered:

  • Why CSM job titles mean basically nothing and what you should be looking at instead
  • The three things that actually determine whether you’re qualified for a role
  • How to decide whether applying for a role you’re overqualified for is a smart career move or whether you’re simply settling
  • Why your current motivation and the phase of life you’re in should influence which CSM roles you apply for
  • Which experience gaps you can realistically stretch on when you feel underqualified and which ones are probably too big of a jump
  • The simple two out of three rule to help you quickly decide whether an underqualified role is actually worth applying for

When you’re ready, here’s how I can help you land a job in Customer Success despite all the competition:
